Christina comes from an inventive,
artistic family in England, and was raised in the Surrey countryside.
Although her older sister went directly into art, Christina preferred to
do a university degree in Biology after working in the herbarium at Kew
Gardens. There are many overlaps between Biology and art: both require
good observation and good drawing skills. Interestingly, scientific
drawing requires detailed work, but Christina’s painting style has an
enviable looseness.
She and her husband, who is
Canadian, moved to Montreal from England in 1982, and Christina studied
Graphic Design and Illustration at Concordia University. In 1985, they
moved to Ontario for her husband to pursue other opportunities.
After 14 years in the world of real
estate, Christina left it behind in 2000, to devote herself to the art
world both as a painter and as a participant in several local art
organizations. She has always done watercolours, with her drawing, since
a child, and now added acrylics to her palette, which she uses in the
thick, oil-paint style. In 2004, her first show was underway at the
KOR Gallery, Kitchener, On, entitled “Fields”.
She has taken a few workshops to
learn more about her medium, but is a bit wary of being influenced by
other artists’ styles and tries to develop in her own way. Christina
likes to explore constantly, to be spontaneous and reactive to what
crosses her path, an interesting progression for an artist who once was
occupied with the precise drawing of plants.
